This is the shot that secured Buddy Hield a place in history.
He became the player with the most three pointers made in his first three seasons in the league. Elite shooters like Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Damian Lillard the previous record holder, are now all behind him.
And a lot of people still don’t even know who he is.
So to honor this extraordinary achievement by Buddy Hield, and to introduce him to the casual NBA fans, let’s break down his long range game. What up everybody my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it.
It’s not the Thunder, nor Golden State, but actually the Sacramento Kings that are leading the league in transition points. And a large majority of that is because of these wing three pointers by Buddy Hield.
There are countless of these shots which appear to be Buddy’s favorite.
Notice how as soon as the Kings get the ball, he has his mind set on going to the wing and letting it fly. I could make an hour long montage of this exact same shot, just look at this.
However, even more interesting than that, is what happens when he notices that this shot would be contested. Take a look at this situation.
He is in position already but Westbrook is trailing and Hield knows that this pass would be intercepted. So he continues to move along the baseline and goes all the way to the other corner.
Westbrook relies on some kind of a switch but doesn’t communicate and Buddy gets a wide open look for the three.
Hield most likely saw this from none other than Klay Thompson. The master of moving without the ball. Something that I also noticed and broke down during last year’s finals.
Again, similar situation here, he runs the break and goes all the way to the other side, and gets an open look.
Buddy does a similar thing in the half court as well. Relocating to the corners after passing the ball, or after offensive rebounds. So his teammates always know where to find him.
Does this remind you of another great shooter?
Steph Curry does the exact same thing and again, ya boy already did a video on that.
So we can see that he takes moves from the best shooters out there and applies them to his game.
So far it’s definitely working for him. The guy is a sniper anyway so when you give him open looks like these, of course he’s going to shoot lights out.
Buddy scored 602 threes on almost 42%, which when you compare with Lillard’s just under 37% it’s evident that we are talking about an elite shooter from downtown in this league.
So in my opinion this is the perfect situation for him right now. The Sacramento Kings are a young and super fast team and they aren’t shy about shooting the ball.
So Hield being one of the cornerstones of this rebuilding team, he’s got a lot more threes to fire up for Sacramento.
I love this roster that they have, and the style of play is extremely attractive. The Kings have already improved 12 wins compared to last year, and as they develop their team chemistry and their young talent, I fully expect and hope for this team to explode next year.
And that could mean a lot more 3 point records broken by Buddy Hield.
