Davis Bertans is the best three point shooter in the league percentage wise. 47.6% from downtown and more than 2 threes per game. But the NBA didn’t let him in the shootout even tho he insisted on it.
And I think I know why. What up everybody my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it.
The official explanation from the league was that despite his high percentage, he didn’t shoot enough shots to qualify. And that’s a flat out lie, because first of all, there isn’t a set number required to qualify, but second and way more interesting, there are 2 guys who’ve actually shot even less threes than Bertans.
So let’s analyze the lineup.
Judging by Lilard, Booker, Middleton and Walker, nowadays it seems that it’s more important to shoot a lot rather than make them.
But when we see Dirk and Seth in the competition, things start to become clear.
Nowitzki himself said that none other than Adam Silver asked him to participate, to honor him in probably his last NBA season. Which is a cool move admittedly, I’m not hating on Dirk in any way. He’s a legend. They clearly bent the shot attempt rule for him, but then, they obviously also bent it for Seth Curry, who also has way lower number of attempts than Bertans.
However he’s the brother of Steph. Both of them born and raised in Charlotte, where the All Star game is, of course.
So I see a storyline of the 2 brothers battling in front of their family, Kemba Walker is going to have the home crowd support, so you see why he is in. And then you have a legend just kind of saying goodbye to the All Star game with standing ovation probably and all the festivities that come with it.
So my point is, the league is not looking for the best shooter here. It’s looking for the most hype, most drama, stories and ultimately money.
After all, that’s why they added a whole rack of moneyballs. It disregards the history of the competition and the great shooters in the past, because you can now easily score more points, but that was the actual plan. More points, breaking records, more excitement when you get to that rack, and overall more hype.
Sure I understand the entertainment aspect of it, but as a basketball purist, I want to see who really is the best. Not the best Curry brother, but the overall best three point shooter.
And a random guy from Latvia and on top of that playing for the Spurs, if he wins the competition, that would be a total buzz kill. The NBA doesn’t want to take that risk.
The thing that’s extremely unfair tho, is that the guy is really a good shooter, and he really wants to be there. Just think about how long the entire NBA begged Lebron to enter the Dunk contest. Never happened.
Also, it’s not like there’s no space in the shootout.
The number of shooters is already increased this year from 8 to 10. So to tell a guy that he can’t make it in there because he hasn’t shot enough, when clearly they already made room for 2 players who also haven’t shot enough, that’s just bad.
But let me tell you what’s not bad, what’s actually really good. I built my website on Squarespace and I thank them once again for sponsoring this video.
I used one of their templates and I was able to easily build a nice website with zero coding skills.
And for those of you that ask me in the comments about my gear, everything is listed in there.
