When it was finished, Downey Christian’s perimeter shooting was just no match for the speed, size and athleticism of reigning state champion Oak Ridge in a Friday night game at the Breast Cancer Awareness Classic.
The host Pioneers (3-0) pulled away from Downey (1-2) in an 87-59 victory.
Senior forward Kaleb Coleman had a game-high 22 points to lead the Pioneers. C.J. Walker added 18, including a spree of dunks. Zavion Smith also finished in double-figures for Oak Ridge, tallying 11 points on the night.
Oak Ridge led by just nine at halftime, 41-32. But the Pioneers got out and running in transition in the second half — with highlight-reel dunks raining down — outscoring Downey by a margin of 46-27 in the third and fourth quarters.
“We came out ready to play — we knew that was a good team coming in,” said Oak Ridge head coach Steve Reece. “Our bigs came to play. C.J. (Walker) and Kaleb (Thomas) came to play right out of the jump. I’m impressed with the win.”
The Patriots were led by sharpshooter Julian Newman’s 26 points, though the 5-foot-7 guard encountered some adversity against the length Oak Ridge defense. Eduardo Peralta scored 17 points for Downey Christian, which competes outside of the FHSAA.
